Vision Statement of

the Cariboo Presbyterian House Church Mission

Purpose:

1a. The primary focus of the Cariboo Presbyterian Church continues to be to reach out with the love of Jesus Christ to rural and remote areas of the Cariboo-Chilcotin. This will mean in most areas using an ecumenical house church model to establish and nurture Christian Faith and community.

1b. A secondary focus is to provide a Reformed witness in more urban areas where there is a need using whatever model of ministry is appropriate.

2. The congregation will continue to focus primarily on reaching out to areas of the region where there is little or no other Christian and/or Reformed witness.

3. The congregation would continue to have an ecumenical focus, welcoming people of all traditions of worship Christ together in a variety of expressions of worship and spiritual life.

Model:

4. While the house church model will be the basis for ministry, it is recognized that in some places and situations, other models of ministry, or variations on the house church model may be more appropriate due to the needs and desires of the community of faith in a specific area. The guidance of the Holy Spirit, through the wisdom of the session will be sought in determining the shape that each new ministry will take.

5. The congregation will have a session made up of up to 6 ruling elders who will be elected by the participants of the ministry and responsible for all the ministry points in the Cariboo-Chilcotin.

6. Ministry in Williams Lake and area would be expanded by a new missionary who would take primary responsibility for the area. There is potential for a shift in ministry in Williams Lake to encourage more growth. Ministry would continue in house churches and small groups, and in addition, a chapel style service would operate alongside in a larger facility on a monthly basis. This would encourage the involvement of those people in the Williams Lake area who are presently outside the reach of the church due to their discomfort or simple lack of awareness of the present house church ministry. Care would be given to ensure that the ministry as it grows would not become 'programme-oriented', but rather remain oriented towards the development of primary Christian community. The Williams Lake and Lac La Hache chapel ministries, as they continue to grow, would especially provide the support and leadership needed for the encouragement of ministry in some of the other more remote areas.

7. The development of leadership within each ministry point would focus on discovering the gifts of each member of the church in order to encourage people to effectively share those gifts with one another. An emphasis will be made upon equipping and challenging people to make use of their spiritual gifts within the Christian community and in the community at large. (See Ephesians 4:12)

Staffing:

8. The Cariboo Presbyterian Church will work towards having a ministry team made up of three full-time missionary positions, which would necessitate the addition of one new ordained missionary. This team would work as equal partners in the whole ministry sharing resources and meeting regularly.

9. The pastoral care of the congregation will be divided between the ministry team. The Bell/Wyminga's will move to the Nazko area and take responsibility for the Northern ministry points. (North, East and West of Quesnel). The Webbers will remain in Lac La Hache to take responsibility for the Southern ministry points. (Lac La Hache and South). Eventually a new team member could locate in the Williams Lake area and take responsibility for the Central area ministry points. (Williams Lake, McLeese Lake and East and West). In the interim period, before the calling of another full-time missionary, a student internship programme could be implemented.

Support:

10. The Cariboo Presbyterian Church will continue to be a home mission project of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, supported by congregational offerings, Canada Ministries grants, and the love gifts of individuals and congregations throughout the Presbyterian Church. The support of a third staff could be raised in a number of ways.

How Far We've Come

How we have implemented the vision statement since adopting it

*We have ordained one new elder and are in the process of ordaining another. This will bring our total of ruling elders to 4.
*The Williams Lake House Church has been hosting worship in the Williams Lake Library Community Room since October 2000. This has been a welcoming place for several new members.
*We have recognized that the need for a third missionary is greater in the Lac La Hache community than in the Williams Lake area. We are working towards gradually building a position for a third part-time position in the Southern part of the region.
*John and Shannon moved to Nazko in 2000. Since then the ministry in the Nazko area has increased especially through work with the children on the Nazko First Nations Reserve.
